At the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ms. Bonander handled cases brought under the False Claims Act involving allegations of healthcare fraud, grant fraud and other types of fraud against the United States. In addition, she handled bankruptcy cases, immigration appellate cases and other types of civil cases in which the United States was the plaintiff. She successfully defended appeals filed in the Second, Ninth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals.
Ms. Bonander’s organized and straightforward style has allowed her to successfully resolve numerous cases, including:
- a False Claims Act case that alleged a local nursing home failed to provide adequate care to its residents, where she assisted in obtaining a $2.5 million settlement;
- a False Claims Act case that alleged grant fraud by Clark Atlanta University, where, as lead counsel, she negotiated a $5 million settlement; and
- a breach of contract dispute involving multiple parties where, as lead counsel, she negotiated a $2.1 million settlement for the General Services Administration after a faulty pipe flooded the Sam Nunn federal building.
Ms. Bonander received her B.A., summa cum laude, with high honors in English Literature from the University of Cincinnati in 1993 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1996. She served on the Georgia Law Review, was chosen as a Marion Smith Scholar and was elected to the Order of the Coif. At the start of her legal career, Ms. Bonander worked as a law clerk for United States District Judge John F. Nangle for two years.
Ms. Bonander prides herself on her ability to quickly get to the heart of the matter in complex and challenging cases. Her two most important values, she says, are “honesty and efficiency.”
Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Ms. Bonander trained to be a classical ballet dancer and pursued dance professionally for several years before going to law school. She enjoys spending time with her husband and son, running and traveling. She has been to Argentina, Bali, France, Sweden and many places in the Caribbean.
